The whole sacrifice thing was a heavy-handed faux-profound statement by the writers to try and wrap up the series so they don't have to work on it anymore.
GOODBYE DEPONIA ENDING HOW TO
Rufus was the only one who could have figured out how to get to Utopia without blowing up Deponia and he's gone. Cletus will never come up with a workable plan to get Elysium to Utopia (as Hermes said, each of them is the sum of their experiences, Cletus, having lived a sheltered life on Elysium, completely lacks Rufus's tinkering skills), so Elysium is basically doomed. The biggest problem with the ending is that Rufus's sacrifice largely spoils all of their efforts so far.

That way his life would still have ended with a selfless act and you wouldn't get the sense that his whole quest was a waste. It would have been much better if he, say, stayed behind on the highboat after everyone else left (perhaps he was never able to get back up on the rotor) and set off a nuclear explosion or something that succeeded in propelling Elysium to Utopia. I don't mind the notion of Rufus sacrificing himself, but his sacrifice accomplished nothing, the only thing it did was allow Cletus to be saved, but he's not capable of saving Elysium without Rufus.
